The S44 runs between the Staten Island Mall and St. George Ferry Terminal along Richmond Avenue. The NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign randomly surveyed 179 riders on the S44 in 2002. Here’s what they think of the route*:

  • "The bus is chronically late."
  • "The buses are so crowded at 8am you can’t breathe."

Riders rated cleanliness, safety, reliability, announcements and crowding on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 is least satisfactory and 5 most satisfactory. Percent of riders dissatisfied represents the proportion of riders giving the rating of 1 or 2. Overall dissatisfaction is an average of the dissatisfaction proportion of all 5 indicators.

On-Time Performance is based on how closely buses adhere to their schedules during evening hours. Wait Assessment is the degree to which buses arrive regularly. The lower the percentage the more buses are arriving bunched together or with big gaps in service.
