Save the Fare. Think Hard.

The New York Times
January 5, 2003

The M.T.A. giveth, then it taketh away. Now that a transit strike has been averted, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to hold public hearings about a fare increase to pay for the wage increase.

But what if riders hatch new ways for the M.T.A. to make or save money? Can they rescue themselves from a $1.75 (or even $2!) fare? Maybe the agency can somehow use solar panels to light subway stations, or allow people to name buses ("the Dottie") for a fee. Send ideas to thecity@nytimes.com. Please include a daytime telephone number.
